Ember sat in her chair and stared at the note, reading it over two or three times before the words sank in. He wasn’t coming to dinner tonight. The note said urgent business, but Ember guessed he was avoiding her. She would’ve thought it proof that he regretted the scene in the library and didn’t care for her, except for one extraordinary detail.

“He called himself Dyre,” Ember breathed. He’d signed the note using the name she gave him.

Ember ate alone, missing Dyre and yet not nearly as troubled as she had been. Dyre’s simple note had lifted her spirits tremendously. That being said, she didn’t linger in the dining room when she was finished. She left Dyre’s portion on the table, and went to the kitchen to explain to Helen. She wasn’t surprised, which made Ember wonder if she’d already known. Not that she would answer if Ember asked.

Without Dyre’s arm to support her, it took twice as long for Ember to climb the stairs. Her feebleness scared her, though it wasn’t anything more than she’d expected. She kept Dyre’s note clenched in her hand until she reached her room and set it on the bed. Then she reluctantly took off the blue dress and hung in in the armoire. Maybe she’d have an opportunity to wear it again.

When she was ready to sleep she climbed into the huge bed and between the blankets. Then she blew out the candle and laid down, her hand resting beneath the pillow on Dyre’s note.
